Beneath the choreographed precision of air travel lies a hidden visual language: the graphic safety markings on airport aprons. These bold lines, arrows, and symbols orchestrate the complex ballet of aircraft, vehicles, and ground crews with utmost precision—a system designed to guide everything to its terminal, its final destination.
Yet when isolated from their functional context and examined closely, these markings reach their own kind of terminal point: they dissolve into pure abstraction. What appears unified from above fragments into individual gestures: different yellows, varying line weights, weathered surfaces, improvised repairs. The universal language of aviation safety becomes surprisingly personal, bearing the traces of different hands, climates, and decisions.
This project documents these overlooked abstractions across airports worldwide, capturing the moment where strict guidance meets absolute ambiguity, where the functional becomes purely visual.
