Winter

Sun

Winter in Vienna is often a condition: for weeks the city lies beneath a uniform grey cover, as if its color had been drained away. During one such winter, “Winter Sun” came into being—born from a deliberately selfish impulse: places I usually associate with summer, ease, and warmth should glow again, even in winter.

For the series, I travel to my favorite summer spots with a battery-powered studio flash. There I introduce a warm, sunlike light into the bleak landscape—not as a trick, but as an intervention. The artificial light becomes a tool for memory: it calls up the “golden hours” that feel embedded in these places and lays them like a second layer of time over the city’s winter state.

At the same time, this gesture is not meant to disprove winter. The grey, the loneliness, the quiet—its drowsy, subdued mood—has its own legitimacy; it is not something that needs to be “fixed.” Precisely through contrast, the intervention can cast new light on what is already there: it reveals how subtly atmospheres can shift, how little it sometimes takes to alter perception, and how much winter already contains before any “sun” is added.

“Winter Sun” moves between documentation and staging, and asks how profoundly our perception of city, place, and time is shaped by light, memory, and longing. (to be continued)
